Distance & Drive Time
Akagera National Park is located approximately 120 kilometres east of Kigali, Rwanda's capital city. The drive takes about 2 to 2.5 hours via the main RN15 highway. The road is well-paved and in excellent condition, passing through scenic rural landscapes and small towns. The route is straightforward and well-signposted, making it one of the easiest national parks to reach in East Africa.
Option 1: Organised Safari Transfer (Recommended)
The most convenient option is booking a safari package that includes round-trip transport from Kigali. A professional driver will pick you up from your hotel, typically between 6:00 and 7:00 AM, in a comfortable 4x4 vehicle. The drive includes a brief stop in Kayonza for refreshments. All our safari packages include this transfer, so you can sit back, enjoy the scenery, and arrive at the park relaxed and ready for adventure. This is the stress-free option we recommend for most visitors.
Option 2: Self-Drive
Self-driving to Akagera is straightforward and popular with adventurous travellers. From Kigali, take the RN4 east toward Rwamagana, then continue on the RN15 through Kayonza to the park's southern gate (Kiyonza). A regular car can handle the main highway, but you'll need a 4x4 for driving inside the park. Several car rental companies in Kigali offer 4x4 vehicles — contact us for recommendations and current rental rates. Fuel is available in Kayonza — fill up before entering the park.
Option 3: Private Hire Car
Hire a private car with a driver from Kigali for a convenient return trip. This gives you flexibility with timing while having someone who knows the roads. The driver can wait at the gate while you do a guided game drive inside the park, or some drivers are licensed to drive inside the park themselves. This is a good middle-ground between a full safari package and self-driving. Contact us for current rates.
Option 4: Public Transport
Budget travellers can take a public bus from Kigali's Nyabugogo bus station to Kayonza (approximately 1.5 hours), then arrange a motorcycle taxi (moto) or local vehicle to the park gate (approximately 30 minutes). However, you'll still need to arrange a vehicle for game drives inside the park. This option is the cheapest but least convenient, and we generally recommend it only for very budget-conscious travellers.
Park Entry Points
Akagera has only one main entry gate. The South Gate (Kiyonza) is the most commonly used, located closest to Kigali and the main visitor centre. The North Gate (Nyungwe) provides access to the northern sector and is useful for travellers coming from the north. Both gates have registration facilities, toilets, and information about the park. Gates are open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Plan to arrive early for the best wildlife viewing.
